Nursing Scholarship
October 1, 2008 |
Nursing can be hard work. “It is so much work and so difficult but it’s really exhilarating
doing it,” says nursing student Michelle Slater. Like many students Michelle is
working towards a nursing degree
while taking care of her family and holding a full
time job. “I always look at the light at the end of the tunnel. I know it’s there
and one step at a time I’m going for it.”
And she means going. Aside from her full time job with the Lee County School System,
Michelle spends two nights a week and all day Saturday in class. She says it’s been
a challenge finding the time and money to complete her nursing education. “The books
are just outrageous, even used books are just amazingly expensive. Then there are
all the little things like uniforms and stethoscopes.”
But a local scholarship program is helping to ensure that Michelle can hit the books
and pay for them too. Michelle is the first recipient of the Feucther Endowed Scholarship.
She says, “I think it is so wonderful. They’re helping people make their dreams
come true. I’m very grateful.”
Auxiliary programs from Cape Coral Hospital, Lee Memorial Hospital, and Southwest
Florida Regional Medical Center raise thousands of dollars to support the nursing
scholarships. Volunteers do everything from sell popcorn and cookbooks to hold special
fundraising events. Several personal donations were also made to the scholarship
fund.
