LiveStrong Day
October 1, 2009 |
Live strong. That’s the message that’s traveling around the country and all over
the globe.
Tomorrow, the Lance Armstrong Foundation kicks off its “2009 LiveStrong Day”, a
global initiative to raise awareness about cancer-related issues.
Lee Memorial Health System is doing its part to raise awareness and will host several
cancer-related seminars at the Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness. “We thought
as a Wellness Center it would be appropriate for us to try and particularly draw
attention to things, steps that people can take to try and reduce their risk of cancer,” adds Dr. Kath Kinross, Physical Therapist for the Lee Center for Rehabilitation
and Wellness.
From 10 until 2, experts will be on hand sharing their knowledge. “Folks from the
Regional Cancer Center will be here giving information on getting screenings for
things like colorectal, prostate and breast cancer. We’re even going to have the
breast model, so you can actually try to feel the lumps in it,” adds Dr. Kinross.
Dermatologists will provide skin cancer screenings, weight-loss experts will talk
about diet and how it relates to cancer and wellness instructors will offer their
advice on helping people kick the smoking habit.
“Some of the simple things we can do like increase our levels of activity, improve
the nutrition choices we make, getting your regular screenings, whether it’s your
mammogram, whether it’s a prostate exam,” she says.
Tours of the Wellness Center and free one week passes will also be given out to
help people fine tune their lifestyle habits and “LiveStrong.” The Lee Center for
Rehabilitation and Wellness will also have special events throughout the month.
