Breast Cancer Walks
October 3, 2008

Last year hundreds of walkers put on pink and got ready to hit the pavement. It was all in an effort to bring awareness to breast cancer.

Glenda Haskell was part of the event. “Well everybody knows somebody who’s either gone through or been affected by it so you know they’ve come a long way and this is why we raise money.” The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks help raise money for breast cancer research, new treatments, and the search for a cure.

But the walks are about more than money. They’re also about celebrating the spirit of the survivor. Barbara Winkoop is a walker and supporter. “I think it’s great that you get such a variety of people, such a variety of cultures…men, women and children. It’s such a great support and it’s just super to see that everybody comes together for this.”

There are several events you can participate in this month to help raise money and awareness about breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization will be hosting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in Cape Coral on October fourth and in Ft. Myers on October eighteenth. Some local businesses are also getting in on the fundraising frenzy. Blu Sushi will hold an event to benefit Susan G. Komen for the cure on October eleventh. Belk department store is teaming up with Lee Cancer Care to host a breast cancer survivor fashion show and fundraiser on October twelfth.

There are many ways and reasons to put on your pink and support this cause. Right now there are more than two million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
