Survivor and Dog
October 4, 2007
|
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. When it comes to breast cancer Southwest
Florida has its share of strong survivors.
Pamela Cicchesi is one of those survivors. She and her dog Bobble are the best of
friends. But the seemingly perfect pair was brought together by an uncommon connection.
Pamela says, “We got him home and I ended up adopting him and a few weeks later
I noticed some lumps on his fur and in his mouth. At the same
time I noticed some
changes in my breast and was going for my first mammogram.”
Pamela and Bobble only had a few weeks to get to know each other when doctors confirmed
that they had one thing in common.
That thing was cancer. “That Saturday I found out that my dog was positive for cancer
and then that Monday I found out that by biopsy results were cancer also,” says
Pamela
Through the following months of treatment, Bobble not only served a faithful companion
but also helped his owner to take on her own cancer treatment with strength and
courage.
Pamela says, “ Before I had my surgery and started chemo, my dog went through four
rounds of chemo and did remarkably well. He was my little inspiration because he
would just lie there and take hi chemo ad I actually think he enjoyed the attention
because he would lay on his back and we would rub him. He wouldn’t whimper or cry
and I’m sitting there going if e can do it, I can do it”.
But Bobble did have one advantage over Pamela: he didn’t lose his hair. “ I’m a
little jealous, he didn’t lose his hair but I think it was meant to be that we found
each other,” Pamela says.
She believes that her and Bobble’s battle with cancer has made her a stronger person
who looks a life a little differently.
