Seasonal Allergies
October 4,
 2009

We may live in the Sunshine State where there are blue skies, fresh coastal air, and warm weather but there’s one thing many Floridians can’t get away from.

“There’s a component of allergies, no matter where you go in the country,” says Dr. James Newlon, an ear, nose, and throat specialist on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. He adds don’t let the tropical weather fool you.

“Seasonal allergies are different depending on what part of the country you are in,” he adds. Since we don’t have the cold and snow, our trees and plants tend to bloom at different times all year round. Landscaping projects can also trigger attacks. “I’ll talk to a lot of my patients and they’ll say, ‘oh, well, when I lived in this state I had no problems. I was doing great. I had no problems and then I moved to this state and its horrible,” explains Dr. Newlon.

If you are having constant flare-ups, a trip to the doctor may be in order. They can usually order the best treatment, based on what you are allergic to. “If you have a lot of allergies and things like that, then it can cause the nose to be a lot more stuffy.” And it’s not just the nose. Allergy sufferers can experience itchy, watery eyes, a dry mouth and hay fever.

If left untreated, the respiratory system could be impacted.
