For eight years Honey Lane traveled the world with the United States Military. After retiring from active duty, Honey signed on as a reservist. “I went in for reasons to be financially set and be able to pay the bills but I stayed because it’s an amazing duty to my country. I loved being in the military, she says.”

But like many other reservists, Honey found it wasn’t always easy to balance a career and fulfill her military obligations. “People were devastated. They go out and fight for their country and defend their country and they come home and be some of them homeless and some of them jobless.”

But Honey says Lee Memorial Health System is doing its part to support employees who also serve in the military. “I can’t even start to say what Lee Memorial has been when it comes to the military support and not just to me, they do it to all of the reservists. Over here at Home Health, the family I have here has been amazing, they usually have celebrations for me before I leave and they have homecomings when I come back.”

Lee Memorial Health System was recently honored by The Department of Defense. The system received the Above and Beyond Award for its extraordinary support of employees who serve in the Florida National Guard and Reserve. “When you think of all the employers there are in the whole state of Florida - to be able to be recognized as one of the top employers that support their military - that’s a big recognition.”

Right now many reservists are being deployed overseas for at least 45 days.

After Operation Desert Storm the federal government put laws into place to protect the civilian jobs of military personal and reservists.
