From pin numbers to cell phone numbers, our technology causes us to feel like we can't live without knowing certain numbers. But do you know your heart numbers?
High heart numbers can equal high odds of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.. So do you know what numbers you should know to help prevent these diseases in your own life ?
Arthur Muller a cardiologist at Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center says "We know the various risk factors for that, two of them are high blood pressure and cholesterol. Those can be measurable."
For Kelly Stewart, finding out her "heart numbers" jump started her to make healthier lifestyle choices and she was able to lose 80 pounds in the process. "That definitely motivated me to lose weight when I realized that I had high blood pressure."
But what exactly what is considered high blood pressure?
Dr. Arthur Muller explains "The old 140 over 90 being borderline is clearly abnormal now. 130-140 if persistent, clinicians would even consider treating. High normal is 120 to 130, normal is 120 and below." And what's a normal number for your cholesterol? Well, doctors recommend your cholesterol stay below 200 - but it's not all about just one number anymore. "It's a multiplicity of numbers. It depends on your case history and it's individualized as to how many risk factors you have."
Everyone over the age of 20 should get their cholesterol levels measured at least once every 5 years. Kelly says regardless of your age, you should find out your risk factors and learn your numbers.
Knowing your numbers can help you see what changes you may need to make to your lifestyle to reduce your risks of heart disease and stroke.
