Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries
October 9, 2009 |
“This is all new bone right here around the edges. . .”
Young children with spinal deformities are seeing some dramatic results thanks to
some new minimally invasive procedures. “Most recently, I did one at Lee Memorial
HealthPark and he’s done great,” says Dr. James Manzanares, an orthopedic surgeon
on the medical staff of The Children’s Hospital.
He says 1% of kids in the U.S. suffer from spine-related problems. “One percent.
Which doesn’t sound like a lot but when you start talking about million of children,
then it translates to quite a few kids,” adds
Dr. Manzanares.
Some of these cases may require strict monitoring, others surgery. Dr. Manzanares
sends his pediatric patients from his Estero practice to HealthPark to receive new
cutting edge procedures. “Some of the kids who are special needs children also require
these long fusions to the pelvis and so I’ve used the Trans 1 and Lateral Axis surgery
to provide this staple as the base for several pediatric patients,” he explains.
There are many advantages to these new minimally invasive procedures: less blood
loss, smaller incisions even reduced hospital stays. Kids are usually back to their regular activities in less time.
