Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Dementia
October 11, 2009 |
Whether it’s coming home after time on the battlefield, a devastating car wreck,
or some kind of threat to your safety, post traumatic stress can wear on you emotionally
and physicially. “There was a study that showed that people who had post traumatic
stress disorder have an increased risk of dementia,” explains geriatrician, Dr.
Michael Raab with Lee Memory Care.
“It’s also true of depression, it’s also true of alcoholism, and alcohol-related
dementia, it’s true of thyroid disease. So there are many things that can have an
impact on your brain and how well it functions.”
He adds that the brain isn’t the only thing impacted. “Dementia is not only a memory
problem, but also problems that affect how well you can function at home, in your
work situation, in the community in general,” says Dr. Raab.
Having difficulty recalling events, not recognizing familiar people and places or
having trouble performing daily routines can all be signs of dementia.
Lee Memory Care is designed specifically to help treat and reduce the progression
of dementia. You can call 239-334-5634 for more information. |
