3D & 4D Ultrasound
October 15,

Seeing is believing. That’s how the saying goes and new high-tech 3D ultrasounds are bringing that idea into focus.

“To the point where a lot of people, around 28 weeks get that just to get a baby picture,” says Dr. Paul Joslyn, an OB-GYN on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System.

Long gone are the day of black and white. The blurry ultrasonic images are now replaced with crisp, clear, defined photos of the unborn baby in the womb. “It’s truly amazing. It's also very helpful for certain, if you are looking for certain things like lets say, a cleft palet, or other problems they tend to show up better with that too,” says Dr. Joslyn.

3D ultrasounds allow parents to get an up-close and personal view of the child’s facial features, even their mannerisms. “It’s a different machine. It’s a higher technology than the usual ultrasound and it takes a bit longer,” explains Dr. Joslyn. There are also 4D ultrasounds that go one step further showcasing movements in the womb.

“There have been advances in ultrasound technology and integrating ultrasonic images with the computer and enhancing them.” Dr. Joslyn says this enhanced technology is not only allowing the parents to see their unborn child in a whole new way, it’s also strengthening the parent-child bond in the process.
