Importance of Bilingual Doctor
Air Date:  October 16, 2006

As the Hispanic population increases in our country the demand for bilingual healthcare workers is growing.

From pediatricians to cardiologists and many specialties in between you may be surprised to learn that many doctors in our area speak more than just English. Take for instance cardiologist Dr. Carlos Cuello.

"My first language is Spanish. Born and raised in the Dominica Republic. Being bilingual, particularly Spanish has allowed me to render services to many patients."

Just like Dr. Cuello, pediatrician Dr. Emilio Del Valle knows the importance of being able to communicate to his patients in their own language.

"It's very important to have no language barriers when we're communicating to the patients."

Patients who speak another language other than English obviously have the same fears and questions that we all do. That's why it's so important for doctors to have a staff that's bilingual.

"All of my staff members are bilingual in Spanish. All of them. I've been very blessed to have bilingual staff because I have a great amount of bilingual and Spanish speaking patients"

"I would say it's almost a must to have someone in the office who can speak Spanish. And if it is their physician, that really makes them feel comfortable."

Not only is it comfortable, it's also life saving because information doesn't have to be "lost in translation."
