In the United States alone, more than 10 million individuals are suffering from a condition called Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a "silent" disease where bones become fragile and more likely to break. Screening is one key to preventing osteoporosis-and the gold standard for that is a bone density scan.
"I'm going for a dexa scan screening this year to check out my done density level."
This test is performed by the dexa-scan machine, which calculates the loss of bone mass to the hip joint caused by aging. The results of your dexa scan are scored in comparison to young, healthy individuals, resulting in a measurement called a t-score.
"If it's greater than -1, then it's considered to be normal bone density. If it's below a -2.5 meaning it's a greater negative number, then it's Osteoporatic."
The key to preventing Osteoporosis is early detection.
"Any woman who's 65 years or older to get it. Post menopausal women who has had a fracture and also any postmenopausal who has another risk factor for Osteoporosis."
There's good reason why all women at risk for osteoporosis undergo this type of procedure.
"And we do have treatment options for patients who are diagnosed with osteoporosis and we try to be diligent about testing these patients with bone density tests to see if the bone is weak."
If Osteoporosis is detected early, treatment can begin to help prevent bone fractures caused by this disease.
