Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Although the demand for blood is high - for some reason the number of people who actually donate are low.
Nick Baldwin is a veteran when it comes to donating blood. "I've been doing this for years and years, I'm on 15 gallons that I have donated. It's just a good habit for people to get into."
Up to 60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood, but as little as 5% actually does. Donating blood can literally mean the difference between someone's life and death. "It's very important in our community to have a good supply of blood products on hand. This is a very important part of community service and is necessary for those that are in need at the time of the emergency."
All blood types are needed. However, people with O blood are particularly in demand because they're the universal donor. "That type of blood is called the universal donor and can be used with anyone who has either type A, B or type AB or type O. So those folks that have 0 positive are very much sought after for blood donation."
Blood donors like Baldwin say donating blood is easy, painless and makes you feel good too. "You've got that good feeling inside knowing that you've helped somebody else--it just gives you that warm and fuzzy."
Normally, every 2 seconds someone in our country needs a blood transfusion, and 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives.
