Hypo vs Hyperthyroidism
October 22,
 2009

It’s called your thyroid and it plays an important role in your everyday life. “It controls basically your metabolism, but can really affect how you feel,” says Dr. Shannon Greer, a family physician on the Lee Memorial Health System medical staff..

A malfunction in your thyroid could cause you to feel tired or weak. You can either gain weight or lose weight depending on the problem.

“Hypothyroidism is basically a decrease in the actual thyroid hormone. Those are the kind of people which will begin to gain weight, get more fatigued, have a difficult time with a cold,” he says.

Then there’s the opposite problem: hyperthyroidism. “Basically people have overproduction of the thyroid hormone. Those people will typically lose weight, will have a heat intolerance, they may feel more irritable, palpitations, tremors,” explains Dr. Greer.

These symptoms can sometimes be gradual, other times, sudden. Your physician can get to the root of the problem with a simple prescribed blood test.
