One of the most valuable assets if you're having to cope with you or a loved one being in the hospital is the hospital's patient advocate.
Hospital patient advocate Mark Geisler feels he has one of the best jobs in the world because he gets to make a positive difference in people's lives. "I help resolve those things. It's a lot of counseling."
Mark's counseling covers a range of topics, helping people who are dealing end of life issues, to just helping patient adjust to a new way of life because of an illness. "I'll get a call saying will you please see Mrs. Jones, she's feeling blue because she just had a colostomy and she's not sure how she's going to react to that. Mr. Smith just had his leg amputated and he's having a hard time adjusting to it."
And his counseling continues with not only people who are in the hospital but Mark also runs support groups.
Grief support group member Wally Lutz says being a part of the support group is like being part of a family. "We may spend a whole hour and a half laughing, telling stories or we may spend the whole hour and a half crying. Tears are something that people accept. And we go out to a different restaurant each week after our 90-minute meeting."
No one understands the pain of losing a loved one like someone who has experienced the same loss. Bringing people together to give them a place to share their feelings helps them work through their grief.
