Breast Cancer Walk
October 31, 2007
|
October is breast cancer awareness month. Hundreds of Cape Coral residents descended
on Jaycee Park to support the cause. Hundreds of walkers put on their pink and hit
the pavement to help bring awareness to the disease and a possible cure.
Pam Chiccesi is a breast cancer survivor who was out to support the cause and celebrate
her own personal fight against the illness. “I’m here to support the cause and bring
awareness to breast cancer and walk with a bunch of great people and survivors.”
Another supporter says, “The ladies that you see here are survivors. There are ladies
that have cancer and also the friends and family. It’s a wonderful location it’s
full of joy and celebration of life.”
It seemed everyone at the lively event was there to support or celebrate the spirit
of the survivor and those who lost their battle with breast cancer.
Richard Gagnon is the husband of a survivor. “ I’m here to support my wife She was
diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, 15 years ago and it came back after about
12 years. “
“I think it’s great that you get such a variety of people, such a variety of cultures…men,
women and children. It’s such a great support and it’s just super to see that everybody
comes together for this,” says supporter Barbara Winkoop
In this environment it’s not hard to find your personal connection to breast cancer.
“Well everybody knows somebody who’s either gone through or been affected by it
so you know they’ve come a long way and this is why we raise money,” says Glenda
Haskell a walker and supporter at the event.
The hundreds of walkers made up dozens of teams. With each step those teams raised
thousands of dollars that will go towards fighting breast cancer and hopefully finding
a cure.
Right now there are more than two million breast cancer survivors in the United
States.
