Cancer Center Opens
November 3, 2008

In July, Rosie Squire came to Fort Myers to spend time with her family. “I came to Fort Myers for my daughter’s wedding and a couple days before that I went to the doctor just for basic girl stuff.”

Rosie’s physician’s visit turned out to be far from basic. She was quickly diagnosed with an advanced form of cervical cancer. “I wasn’t going to go anywhere for awhile. I needed to start immediate surgery, treatment, the whole package. I’m grateful that I’m in this area.”

Rosie was one of the first patients to undergo chemotherapy treatment at the newly opened Regional Cancer Center. “This facility here is just fantastic I’m glad to be a part of it being brand new. I was surprised at how big it was. I didn’t expect anything this big. I love the design and the style, the colors.”

Sharon MacDonald is the Vice President of Oncology Services for Lee Memorial Health System. She says the new center is going to bring groundbreaking cancer services to Southwest Florida. “Every single person that has come into the facility has felt its sort of healing parts. It’s peaceful, it’s serene, it’s bright, it’s cheery, it’s welcoming. They’ve all felt the way that we designed this building and that was to create an environment of healing for patients and families.”

The Regional Cancer Center encompasses 63,000 square feet and offers unique services including private treatment rooms and genetic counselors. The center has taken more than a decade to plan and build and its price tag is estimated to be close to $25 million.
