Support Groups
November 4, 2008 |
For decades social worker Mark Geisler has been an advocate for support groups.
Right now Mark supervises groups that deal with everything from loss and grief to
organ transplantation. He says no matter the topic, the goal is still the same.
“Support groups are just what it says - people who are there to help one another.
You come and you just talk about what’s going on in a private environment where
you can learn that you’re not the only one and you can figure out how other people
have coped with situations.”
Research shows sharing your concerns with others in a supportive environment is
beneficial to both the person who is sharing and the person who is listening. “When
we help other people we feel good about ourselves so the giving and the receiving
occurs in equal measure, so when you talk you’re helping somebody else and you’re
helping yourself,” Mark says.
There are dozens of free support groups being offered right now in Lee County. To
find out
more information you can call 239-939-8319. You do not have to be affiliated
with or be a patient of Lee Memorial Health System to attend a support group, everyone
is welcome.
