Never Too Old to Exercise
November 4, 2009

Whether it’s walking the dog, taking a swim class, or lifting a few weights, regular movement not only works the body but can help you live longer.

“Any exercise that they like and enjoy and are willing to do is the best exercise,” adds Kathy Gardner, Exercise Physiologist at the Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness.

Think you’re too old to exercise? That’s not an excuse. According to the newest study from the American College of Sports Medicine, researchers found that regular exercise can greatly improve the quality of life for those over 65. “Exercise helps reduce their risk factor, helps their blood pressure, helps maintain their healthy weight, helps keep their lean muscles strong, helps with strong healthy back, reduces stress, helps with all those factors that creep up on us as we get older,” explains Gardner.

Since each person’s physical body is designed differently, it’s important to talk to your physician about the best exercises for you. The exercise physiologists at the Lee Center for Rehabilitation Wellness can help you get on your way. “They sit own with an exercise specialist and we assess where they are starting from and so we make goals for them, set up a routine for them; takes all the guess work out.”

Whether it is osteoporosis, diabetes or cardiac related issues, there are exercise programs out there designed for every person, no matter their physical health. More choices mean less excuses to not get up and get moving.
