Helmet Safety
November 7, 2008 |
Like many kids, Chris Molloy admits he doesn’t always wear his helmet like he should
when he is skateboarding. “Sometimes a helmet just gets in the way when you’re out
skating in the streets. It just kind of annoys you when it’s hot out.”
But the helmet is the best way to protect yourself against head injury whether you’re
skating, bicycling, or playing a sport and could prevent almost 85% of accidents.
Dan Moser is a bike and safety instructor. He says, “They really add to the safety
factor even more than seat belts do in a car so they really do work.”
And a helmet can’t protect you if it’s hanging in the garage. It has to be on your
head. Checking to make sure it fits correctly is also just as important as wearing
the helmet itself.
It’s also important for parents to educate their children on the helmet safely,
especially while riding a bike in traffic. “Any child under 16 is compelled by law
to wear a bike helmet. I would say the law of nature would compel you to have your
child wear a bike helmet.”
If you want to learn more about how to keep your children safe you can head over
to the injury prevention fair tomorrow at Lee Memorial Hospital. The fair is free
and will begin at ten in the morning.
Remember if your bike or skateboarding helmet becomes cracked or you’re involved
in an accident; be sure to replace it before getting back to action |
