Healing Garden
November 8, 2008 |
A cancer diagnosis can be a difficult thing to deal with
especially if you need
immediate treatment.
Sharon Mac Donald is the Vice President of Oncology Services at Lee Memorial Health
System. She says, “It’s hard enough for them to go through a cancer diagnosis and
yet have to come to sterile, institutional kinds of places for treatment.” That’s
why the designers and doctors involved
in building The Regional Cancer Center wanted
to add Mother Nature’s touch to the facility. The end result is a serene spot called
the healing garden.
“We had a donor that has devoted her life to making environments better in terms
of her flowers and horticulture and she actually funded this healing garden. The
healing garden is really a place where people can come and be still or be at peace.
Everything in this garden has some element of healing to it. Whether it be the lavender
that we put in or the rosemary herbs or those kinds of things. When people look
at it they see life springing forth from every tree, sprig even our water at the
back where the birds will come and nest.”
The garden was specifically designed to be enjoyed by all patients, inside and out.
“The view out the windows - that is fantastic.
It’s nice because it’s serene, it’s
peaceful it kind of brings you back closer to nature and that’s really good in recovery.”
The healing garden is filled with plants and flowers that will be colorful year-round.
Research shows that focusing on meditation and positive energy can improve the process
of recovery and healing. |
