Cancer Center Pharmacy
November 14, 2008 |
Most patients never get to peek at the inner-workings of their pharmacy. But at
the Regional Cancer Center the oncology pharmacy is literally at the center of treatment.
“The pharmacy is right in the middle of the cancer center so it’s accessible to
all the people who work here - the nurses. We are accessible to the patients, we
are available and if they do want to speak to us they just have to ask,”
says Tina
Gegeckas, the Director of Oncology Pharmacy Services at the Regional Cancer Center.
The hi-tech facility was built
to protect the pharmacists from hazardous chemicals
while they create life-saving medications. Tina says, “We want to make sure that
the process works, that it’s timely, safe and efficient.”
Oncology pharmacists’ work to ensure a patient’s treatment plan will be both safe
and effective. “An oncology pharmacist goes through more training that’s specific
to chemotherapy. They know the other medications that a person can receive while
they’re on chemotherapy, the drugs that will help them not feel nauseous, or to
not feel anxious, or to make sure that their organs are functioning properly,” Tina
says.
The goal is that by the end of November these pharmacists will be able to prepare
the chemotherapy medications for all of the patients within Lee Memorial Health System. |
