Tobacco Free Lee: Phase 3
November 14, 2009

Smoking. It’s not only bad for those who light up, but for those who are near a smoker.

“We do know that the risk is bad so the symptoms would be equivalent to anybody else who smokes, coughing, shortness of breath, even at rest or on exertion, chest pain,” warns LMHS pulmonary medicine physician, Dr. Sunil Pammi.

On Thursday, Lee Memorial Health System launches its third and final phase of “Tobacco Free Lee”. All of the system’s facilities, 74 in total, will be declared tobacco free.

“The phase approach was really determined to be the most respectful, compassionate way to begin weaning people towards a Tobacco Free Lee on November 19th” explains Brad Pollins, System Director of Organizational Effectiveness. The final phase coincides with the “Great American Smokeout.” Smokers who want to light up can do so in designated areas, but as of Thursday, they must move off the property entirely.

Since 1 out of every 5 deaths in this country is blamed on smoking, Lee Memorial Health System hopes this new policy will create a healthier atmosphere for everyone.
