Holiday Childproofing 1
November 19, 2007

Many of you will be welcoming dozens of family members into your homes this holiday
season. Vanessa Amaya says she sometimes feels nervous about taking her little one
into a house he’s not familiar with. She says it’s hard enough keeping up with 11-month-old
Mika in her own home. “He’s quick and he’s quiet so he’ll go and I’ll be like 'Mika
what’s going on' and the next thing I know he’ll be at one of those spots.” Vanessa
knows the dangerous spots in her own home are childproof.
But when the holidays
come around she does have a lot more to think about regarding Mika’s safety. “I
feel uneasy about going to somebody else’s house because I’m not sure if they’re
home is child proofed for my son and if they have stuff that can break easily and
if he can get into the cabinets and stuff.” Physicians say Vanessa has a valid concern.
When little ones are brought into a new place, they are eager to explore it. “The kids are in a new environment so they’re curious and they are looking all around
they are exploring that environment and are finding things that the grandparents
would have never thought of,” says Michele Kind the Director of the Child Advocacy
Center of the
Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. She adds that everybody
gets caught up in holiday season. “Although it’s a really fun time with a lot of
traditions you just have to be extra careful with the little ones.”
