Holiday Childproofing 2
November 20, 2007
|
With Thanksgiving just a couple of days away, you may have already started preparing
for the arrival of holiday guests. Well, this thanksgiving Vanessa Amaya is looking forward to her family gatherings, but she
knows she’ll have to keep a close eye
on 11 month old Mika. Vanessa says “I
feel uneasy about going to somebody else’s house because I’m not sure if their home is child proof for my son. You can never be too safe; you have to be two steps ahead of them.” Vanessa tries to help relatives
prepare their home before little
Mika comes to visit.
Michele king, Director of the child advocacy
Center at
Children’s hospital of Southwest Florida says Vanessa has the right idea. Sometimes older relatives especially need
help preparing for the little ones. “Lots of times grandparents aren’t used to having
small children in the house so they have nick-knacks out and about. They can usually
swallow or have sharp edges so we just ask them to look at the height of the children
who are visiting and the things that they may be able to reach. Sometimes they leave
their medication at the bedside or just on the vanity and little children are quick and their curious so it’s important to be sure that all that medicine is put away,”
says Michele. She also says it’s important to make sure doors leading to a pool
area are locked and even alarmed.
She also advises to keep toys or shiny objects out of the pool so kids will not
be enticed to enter the area.
