Tackling Type 2 Diabetes
November 24, 2009

“He had a horn on his belt- honk honk honk honk! Do you remember Clara Bell from the Howdy Doody Show? This is exactly what he reminded me of.”

Sixty-nine year old Saul Zuckman credits a persistent clown at a health fair for leading him to discover he had Type 2 Diabetes “Petrified. I was scared. I thought that my useful life was coming to an end and people with diabetes get their legs cut off, can’t leave a normal healthy life. I was thinking, ‘is it time to update my will,” admits Zuckerman.

Saul chose not to be complacent. In 3 years, he lost 70 pounds through diet, exercise, and even joined “Team Type 2,” a cycling group that bikes across the country.

He recently spoke at HealthPark about the importance of diabetes support groups. “Extremely useful because you are talking with people that are not health care professionals, but are people who are walking in your shoes, they’ve done this, you’re doing this and you have people to commiserate with.”

Lee Diabetes Care covers all sorts of topics: from diet, to exercise, to blood sugar readings, even insulin-related concerns. “The key is education; educating yourself on how to manage your diabetes. We provide classes here. We provide one-on-one,” adds Amy Carroll, Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator.

Saul adds that knowledge is power when it comes to dealing with diabetes. “Diabetes is like running a marathon as opposed to a sprint. You are in it for the long haul and if you pace yourself, you understand what you are doing and get to understand how your body works. This is something you can do.”
