Patty Berg Remembered
November 27, 2006

Back in September the world of golf and our community mourned the loss of a true legend.

Patty Berg is a golf legend. Not only was she one of the founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, she won 60 tournaments during her career, including 15 majors. But one accomplishment that continues to touch lives in our community today is the Patty Berg Cancer Center.

Founder, Patty Berg Charity Golf Classic and friend of Patty Berg, Linda Weglarz explains, "The cancer center is really her legacy. It speaks volumes about her and how she gave unselfishly. You know, she was up there visiting patients even when she didn't feel well."

Oncology Care Specialist Laurie Wise says that's why the winning spirit really is symbolic to her life. She was not only a winner at golf, Patty also persevered and won her battle against cancer. "She always talked about the winning spirit and fighting cancer how necessary it was to have the winning spirit to fight cancer."

Linda says, "She never let down. She was always moving in a path of living life that way."

Laurie believes that it's Patty's winning spirit that will never be forgotten and in fact the employees here at the Patty Berg Cancer Center are determined to take that winning spirit well into the future. "I think when the community hears the term Patty Berg Cancer Center they immediately of course associate it with Patty and her spirit, her passion for finding a cure for cancer."

And just as Patty Berg was called to play golf, many people that work at the Patty Berg cancer center feel called to do what they do as well. Laurie also says "Oncology nursing is really a calling, it really is a passion for people all of the nurses here really do have that calling that special connection with people."

So even though Patty is no longer with us, her special connection with people continues at the Patty Berg Cancer Center.

And when did Patty Berg make that Ft. Myers connection? Patty moved here back in 1946 from her hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
