Hospital Teacher 1
November 27, 2007
|
For Laurie Gill a day at the hospital is just another day at the office. The school
teacher doesn’t work in your average schoolhouse. Her classrooms aren’t equipped
with desks or chalkboards and her students are sometimes allowed to sleep through
class. That’s because Laurie’s students are also patients at the Children’s Hospital
of Southwest Florida.
“There are a lot of kids who come here for weeks, months, and repeatedly throughout
the year and they still need to do their schoolwork,” says Laurie. Every day she
makes her rounds, transforming hospital rooms into classrooms.
Laurie says, “I work as a direct liaison between the school districts. I usually
email the teachers and they email me back with the assignments the kids are working
on in the classroom for that week.” The former middle school math teacher is now
teaching everything from the ABC’s to American government. “I work with Pre-K through
twelfth grade students so I work with a variety of children. I love teaching a variety
of subjects and I love teaching a variety of kids. I feel great when I leave the
hospital everyday because I’ve helped them and they really appreciate it,” Laurie
says.
