Brain aneurysms…you’ve probably heard the term before but you may not know exactly what the condition entails. Doctor Eric Eskioglu is the director of Endovascular/Vascular Neurosurgery at Healthpark Medical Center. He describes an aneurysm as “when the arteries are connected together there might be a little abnormal connection and that is what causes you to have an aneurysm. It is an out pouching of the blood vessel… they may grow over time.” Physicians say many people who have an aneurysm don’t even know it’s there. “If it grows to a certain point it becomes problematic and like I said we don’t find it until it ruptures or is coincidently found,” says Dr. Eskioglu. When an aneurysm ruptures he says it can become life threatening within seconds. “Those that make it to the hospital about half of them have permanent neurological deficits.” That’s why recognizing the warning signs of an aneurysm is crucial. If it ruptures you will need to seek emergency care immediately. Dr. Eskioglu says, “For symptoms its classic, you’ll have the worst headache of your life. It will be sharp and it will come suddenly as far as alertness it may knock you out, you may pass out. You will have nausea and vomiting with it. You’ll also have aversion to light.” Imaging techniques such as MRI’s and C-T Scans are able to detect aneurysms before they become problematic.
