When a couple is looking at their options for permanent birth control the woman may consider "getting her tubes tied."

There may come a time when you and your partner decide that your done having children-for Jennifer Fletcher and her husband, 3 was their number.  "Three's quite enough especially with that last one."  

For couples considering permanent birth control OB/Gyn Dr. Jane Daniel says three very important questions to answer.  Would pregnancy be considered again if: #1 something happened to their children #2 if something happened to their partner and they met someone new and #3 if money were no object.  "And if you can tell me for all three questions, absolutely not, no way, then tubal ligation if it's the woman, vasectomy if it's the man." 

If you're undecided about which partner should undergo the permanent birth control procedure, then you might want to consult with your physician. Dr. Daniel suggests, "Vasectomy I feel is a safer option. We do not go into the men's body cavity, we do give them general anesthetic so we're not putting their large blood vessels at risk." 

Dr. Daniel says that however--- there is a time when it may be easier for the woman to go ahead and get a tubal ligation other wise known as getting her tubes tied.  "If we're doing a Cesarean section then the risk-benefit table flips.  We're already in your abdomen, we're right there, your tubes are there it doesn't make sense not to do it."  

 This type of surgery is effective immediately with a 99.5% success rate.
