Diabetes Type 1 and 2
December 8, 2008 Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes in America. It affects both children
and adults. Sharon Tilbe is a registered dietitian with Lee Diabetes Care. “About
93% of the people with diabetes have Type 2. Type 2 diabetes has a strong family
link often times associated with aging, weight gain or overweight, and lack of regular
physical activity.”
When a person has Type 2 diabetes, their body either does not produce enough insulin
or cells ignore insulin. Type 1 diabetes is slightly different. “Type 1 diabetes
is classified as an autoimmune condition whereby the beta cells in the pancreas
that produce insulin are no longer producing insulin,” says Sharon.
The symptoms of high blood sugar are likely to be similar regardless of the type
of diabetes you have. “You might be very thirsty you might have frequent urination
and of course if you’re urinating frequently you’re going to be very, very, thirsty,
so those are the classic symptoms of high blood sugar.”
For some diabetes sufferers, high blood sugar can also cause their vision to become blurry.
