Holiday Travel Tips
December 16, 2008 |
Many of you will be traveling far and wide to visit our loved ones this holiday
season. That could mean spending several hours at a time cramped into a car or crowded
airplane. Physicians say it’s important to keep your body moving and your blood
pumping.
Dr. Woodrow Yeaney is a vascular surgeon. He says, “The other thing is venous-status
and by that I mean if you don’t get a lot of blood flow through the legs. If you’re
on a long plane ride or a long car ride, get up and move around every so often to
keep the blood moving.
You have to be careful, you really have to move around as
much as you can.”
Physicians suggest if you’re on a plane to get up out of your seat every couple
of hours and walk the length of the aircraft. If you’re in a car you may want to
stop every few hours to stretch your muscles and take a quick walk. Wearing loose
fitting clothes and taking baby aspirin can also help prevent blood clotting if
you’re sitting for long periods of time.
Here are some other quick travel tips to keep you healthy this holiday season. Always
wash your hands and eat a well balanced diet rich in vitamins to help prevent catching
a cold or cough. Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated during your travels
will also help to keep you healthy.
If you feel like you have a cold or are under the weather it’s important not to
board an airplane. If you do, you can bet on spreading the sickness to the other
passengers on your flight. Some travelers go as far as wearing a face mask or ozenator
to help prevent catching a cold or cough when they fly. |
