Holiday Blood Donations
December 24, 2008

Each time a person donates blood they can save the lives of up to three people.  However, lives can only be saved if there is enough blood to go around.  “Blood is always going to be used and we need to make sure the inventory levels are high enough to make sure everybody gets what they need,” says Nancy Hendrick who is a program coordinator for Lee Memorial Blood Centers.  The holiday season usually marks one of the slowest times of year for donating blood.  Nancy says, “During the holiday season a lot of people are sick, we have the flu, other reasons why they can’t donate a lot of people are too busy, people are on vacation, people are out doing their Christmas shopping.”  The staff with Lee Memorial Blood Centers is working to make giving blood easy and fun this season.  They’re asking for your support in the Be a Holiday Hero Blood Drives.  “We have mobiles that are out every single day at their churches, businesses, retail locations the hospitals the three sites we have at Cape, Healthpark, and Lee donor centers are open.  We have a festive theme going on here, we have food, we have gifts we have raffle prizes, door prizes to motivate them to come on out.”  Nancy says there is still plenty of time for you to become a Holiday Hero Blood Donor.  The next scheduled blood drives are on December 30th at Gulf Coast Hospital, January 7th at Healthpark Medical Center and January 15th at Lee Memorial Hospital.  On average the process of donating blood takes about a half hour from start to finish.
