Cancer
Center
Programs
December

One goal of the Regional
Cancer Center is to
provide a place of hope
and healing for area
patients and their
families. Sharon
MacDonald is the Vice
President of Oncology
Services with Lee
Memorial Health System.
She says, “Every single
person that has come
into the facility has
felt its sort of healing
parts. It’s peaceful,
it’s serene, it’s
bright, it’s cheery, and
it’s welcoming.” Along
with state of the art
technology, area
physicians and
specialists also wanted
to welcome alternative
types of therapy to the
center. Programs that
focus on everything from
yoga to meditation can
offer patients a way to
become more hands on in
their healing. “When
you get cancer you lose
control and so many
patients all they want
is for their life not to
be defined by their
disease anymore so they
want control back. So
the ways you do that is
by teaching them yoga,
allowing them to center
themselves. You do it
by offering tai chi or a
talking support group.
You do it by expressive
art,” says Sharon.
Patient programs also
focus on cancer
education. Workshops
and seminars are
scheduled to help
patients learn more
about their specific
cancer diagnosis and
treatment. Programs and
support groups are
offered for family
members and caregivers
as well. “Virtually
everything a cancer
patient needs is in this
one location. It’s a
destination point. We
want them to come into
this building and into
this place and feel
uplifted,” says Sharon.
