Collier
Child
Advocacy
December
29, 2008 |
The doors are open at
the Collier County
Children’s Advocacy
Center. Since September
the sparkling new
facility has been able
to serve as a focal
point for families from
Naples to Immokalee.
Diana Serrano is a
program coordinator at
the center. She says, “
A lot of parents have so
many questions and they
don’t know where to go
and that’s why we’re
here to help them and to
let them know we’re
here.” Collier county
kids are now getting
more learning
opportunities too.
Educational programs
like Germaine the Germ
and Mission Nutrition
have been extremely
successful in Lee
County. Now Collier
classrooms have the
opportunity to benefit
from these interactive
lessons as well. “They
are very excited about
having this service
available to the
community. It’s
exciting we want them to
see that we’re out there
and making sure that we
can provide the same
type of help to the
families that is needed
in Collier, “says Brenda
Hernandez a Child
Advocate at the CACCC.
Free parenting classes
are also offered through
the center. The eight
week course is free to
all residents and child
care and food is
provided. Diana says,
“Parenting does not come
in a book, you learn as
you go and we’re here to
give the parents basic
knowledge. Like a lot
of communities in
Southwest Florida
parents want to learn.”
The center is associated
with the Children’s
Hospital of Southwest
Florida and is funded by
a grant from the Naples
Children and Education
Foundation. To learn

Advocacy programs you

main goal of the Child
Advocacy Center is to
educate families about
preventable accidents
such as drowning,
shootings and
poisonings.
