Resolutions
December 31, 2007

What’s your new year’s resolution? A few Fort Myers residents pondered that question recently. Mark DeMars says he wasn’t quite sure what to vow to improve for 2008. “I don’t know ride the bike more. Do a little more exercise. That’s always good for relieving stress I guess. “Nancy Young had a more simple and direct resolution. “Eat more chocolate,” she said. As for Amy Pits she says she wants to scale down her lifestyle a bit next year. “To try and not need so much stuff. I want to try and have a bit of a simpler life.” No matter what your goal for the New Year may be, sticking to those resolutions isn’t always a simple task. Mark Geisler is a social worker who is also a patient advocate for Lee Memorial Health System. He says, “We, with all the best of intentions decide that we are going to do some things to improve our lives and then we feel guilty because we haven’t done them.” Mark says the best way to make achievable resolutions is to do some realistic self inventory. He advises you to list both your best and your not so good qualities. “Make a list about the things about you that are good, things you like about yourself and that’s hard but really do it and then make a list of those few things you would like to improve on.” Mark says you should then take those aspects that need improving and decide on some measurable, short term goals to work towards. He adds that if you slip up one day there is no need to worry. The key to achieving your goals is being able to start working towards them again shortly after your slip-ups.
