Physical Therapy- Home Field Advantage: June 23, 2013

“I have a lot of friends here that play golf and I want to be back playing golf with them,” says Tom Hegel.

Swinging the club eventually took a toll on Hegel.

“I went to the doctor and he said I had torn ligaments or tendons and recommended I go for arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery,” says Hegel.

Surgery alone was not the save he was looking for. Rotator repair, along with most orthopedic surgeries, requires proper rehab. Many people fail the follow through.

“And that’s where the physical therapist comes in and is able to put them on a program where then they can get back to their functional activities, whether that’s golf, whether that’s tennis,” says Neal Trottier, physical therapist with Lee Memorial Health System.

Hegel didn’t need to travel any farther than his clubhouse gym.

“I can drive my golf cart, come here in two minutes and do my therapy,” says Hegel.

“I see in this setting that they’re definitely much more compliant. The cancellation no-show rate is almost nil,” says Trottier.

The essentials therapists need are standard in most fitness centers: side-by-side weight machines, free weights, accessories and cardio equipment. What they bring is the expertise and motivation.

“He showed me all kinds of different exercises with hand weights and with the bands here and we even do isometrics and just all kinds of movements that are repetitive,” says Hegel.

“This can be covered under insurance, this was billed the same way if somebody came into a outpatient clinic, an outpatient physical therapy clinic or a occupational therapy clinic,’ says Trottier.

Taking advantage of the home field may help more rehab patients get back in the field of play.
