Nursing Internship Program Frequently Asked Questions

What is the nursing internship program?
The nursing internship program is an "earn-while-you-learn" program designed to facilitate the role transition from student to practicing nurse at Lee Memorial Health System. In addition it is a program that also provides experienced nurses who are changing specialties an opportunity to advance their careers.

What are the goals of the nursing internship program? 
The goals of the nursing internship program are to:

  • Provide an opportunity for the intern to demonstrate understanding and competence in technical skills and procedures related to their specialty
  • Provide an opportunity to apply sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills throughout the nursing process in the management of patient care
  • Develop time management and delegation skills
  • Provide an orientation of the nurse intern to the specialty unit

How do I get into an internship program? 
The process is simple. Whether or not you are currently a Lee Memorial Health System employee, you will need to click here to apply online. (Use keyword Internship and area of interest Nursing.)

How long is the internship program?   
The length of the program varies with each internship program.

What is the salary for the internship program?
The starting salary for an RN with no experience is $21.50/hour including excellent benefits. You must have your statement of eligibility to sit for NCLEX from the State Board of Nursing in order to be hired as a nurse intern. If you do not have that you may still get into the internship program but you will be hired as a PCT or NCA until you receive your eligibility. You will not be allowed to participate in medication administration and any other activity that falls outside of the PCT/NCA scope of practice.

Do I have to sign a contract?
Yes, each internship program has an agreement that is to be signed. In essence, the contract indicates that you will work on that unit for a specific length of time (depends on program) or you will be required to payback a prorated sum of money.
