Nursing Internship Program Summaries 

Lee Memorial Health System offers a variety of nurse internships that are run throughout the year. These internship programs are available to both new graduate nurses and experienced nurses interested in pursuing a different nursing specialty. All internship programs require a signed employment agreement. The length of the commitment depends on the program.


Medical-Surgical Internship
This is a 2-week program designed to assist the new graduate nurse in transitioning from the school environment to the acute care medical-surgical environment. This course is presented using a combination of skill –based didactic, case study presentation and clinical experiences

Progressive Care Internship
This is a 5-week course that examines some of the more complex concepts related to nursing on a progressive care unit. Some of the areas discussed are cardiac and respiratory assessment, identification of ECG rhythms, cardiac medications, and acid-base balance. This course is designed for both the new graduate nurse and experienced medical-surgical nurse desiring to advance to a progressive care environment.
Prerequisite: Med-Surg internship classes or Waiver from Director 

Intensive Care Internship
This 1-week course is a continuation of the Progressive Care course. This course is for nurses who desire to work in the Intensive Care environment. The focus of this course is on hemodynamic monitoring, oxygen delivery and transport, mechanical ventilation, vasoactive and inotropic drugs, shock and other concepts related to the care of the critically ill patient.
Prerequisite: Completion of Med-Surg and Progressive Care Internship classes or Waiver from Director

Open Heart Intensive Care Internship
This course focuses on the role of the critical care nurse in the care and recovery of the patient undergoing open heart surgery. Topics discussed are: types of open heart surgery, hemodynamics monitoring of the open heart surgical patient, myocardial preservation during surgery, as well as the specific nursing care of the open heart surgical patient. In addition, clinical experiences are provided in the Open Heart operating room and cath lab.
Prerequisite: Completion of the Progressive Care and Intensive Care classes or equivalent experience.

Emergency Nursing Internship
This comprehensive course addresses specific issues related to emergency nursing. Topics include: abuse detection and reporting, triage, care of specific types of medical and surgical emergencies. Clinical experiences are obtained in the Emergency Department.
Prerequisite: Progressive Care and Intensive Care classes or equivalent experience required for the following Internship programs.

Maternal-Child Internship 
This program is designed for both the new graduate nurse and the experienced medical-surgical nurse who would like to work in the maternal-child environment. This course covers the assessment of the normal newborn, assessment of postpartum patient, care of the antepartum patient, as well as labor and delivery. Classes are given over an 8-week period.

Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Internship
This internship program is designed for both new graduate and experienced nurses who would like to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The focus of this 7-week course is on neonatal assessment and physiology, ventilatory management, thermoregulation, medications and brain and spinal cord development as well as neonatal resuscitation. 

Pediatric Nursing Internship
This internship program is designed for both the new graduate and experienced nurse who would like to work in the pediatric area. The focus of this 5-week course is on the assessment and care of the pediatric patient. 

Perioperative Nursing Internship
This is a course for nurses with wanting to work in the operating room. This 12-month internship focuses on the role of the nurse in the OR environment. The perioperative nurse intern will spend the first several weeks in class learning about the environment of the surgical suite, asepsis, gowning and gloving, electrosurgical and lasar safety, and the basics of wound closure. The remainder of the 12-months is spent in the clinical area focusing on the intraoperative care of specific types of surgical patient’s.
