of Mexico.
The Fort Myers/Lee County area is one of the fastest growing communities in the United
States. The county’s population is more than 571,000 and continues to grow.
Fort Myers and Cape Coral sit on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf
of Mexico. Fort Myers is just a two-hour drive from Tampa and Miami, two of Florida’s
largest cities. Lush vegetation and a variety of native wildlife abound in the tropical
climate. Outdoor activities are year round, with the average annual temperature a
comfortable 74 degrees.
Culture and Entertainment
Community concerts, the Southwest Florida Symphony, the Lee County Civic Center,
Harborside Convention Center, the Children’s Science Museum, the Imaginarium and a
variety of musical, art and dance groups are all part of the cultural life in the area. The
Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall is the setting for an impressive array of musical,
theatrical and entertainment presentations, including nationally acclaimed starts and
Broadway productions.
Lee County is also an ideal place for a sports enthusiast. It is the perfect setting for
outdoor sports, such as kayaking and waterskiing, and it is the site of spring training
for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. The Florida Everblades, who are part of
the East Coast Hockey League, and the Florida Firecats arena football team also call Lee
County home.
Taxes
Florida has no state income tax. Property taxes are levied by counties, cities, and special
districts. The Homestead Exemption program excludes the first $25,000 of appraised
home value from property taxes. Sales tax in Lee County is 6 percent.
