About This Specialty
Geriatric medicine is a medical specialty focused on the health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. There is no set age at which patients may be under the care of a geriatrician or geriatric physician. Rather, this decision is determined by the individual patient's needs, and the availability of a specialist.
Older adults are often dealing with many different health issues. When someone has 3 or more chronic medical conditions, it is often a good time to start seeing a geriatrician (doctors who are specially trained to care for older adults, especially when care is complicated).
Some of the conditions we treat include:
- Aging Body
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Morbid or severe obesity
- Multiple sclerosis
- Heart Failure
- High Cholesterol
- Hypertension - High Blood Pressure
- Primary Care
House Calls is a Geriatric/Internal Medicine program that provides medical care to patients who have been recently discharged from the hospital and are homebound.
Currently, only homebound patients who are in need of a primary care physician visit will be accepted into this program. Patients will return to their primary care physician as soon as they are well enough to travel to the office. Older adult patients are accepted throughout Lee County.
