Lee Convenient Care at Pine Island Road Welcomes Radiology

Nervous your sprained ankle might really be a fracture? Worried your chest cold has turned into pneumonia? Such concerns no longer involve a drive to the emergency room, as all Lee Convenient Care centers now offer radiology.

“All of our X-rays are performed by a trained radiology technician,” says Dr. Avra Bowers, Senior Lead Physician of Lee Convenient Care. “And after the LCC physician reads the X-rays, all films are sent to a radiologist. In some other urgent care centers, if someone misses a nodule on a chest X-ray, there may not be a radiologist who takes a second look. Here, all final readings are done by a radiologist.”

Lee Convenient Care at Pine Island Road welcomed radiology mid-July, rounding out X-ray capabilities through all Lee Convenient Care walk-in centers. If a child swallows a coin or if an adolescent swallows a tongue ring, they can be seen at Lee Convenient Care. X-rays will determine where the metal lies, if it’s stuck in the esophagus or if it’s small enough to pass.

If a worker worries some sliver of metal slipped under his or her skin, an X-ray will say yes or no. “Our X-rays will find foreign bodies—metal, stone, some glass, sometimes wood, seashells or other ocean rocks, pebbles,” Dr. Bowers says. “We will clean out the wound and then take another X-ray to make sure it’s completely gone.”

If a chest X-ray does reveal pneumonia, antibiotics will be given. If a sprained ankle proves to be a fracture, Lee Convenient Care staff will stabilize the fracture, provide crutches and refer the patient to an orthopedic specialist. “Please know, we will get you to the correct place,” Dr. Bowers says. “If you need to go to the emergency room, if you need a specialist, we will do everything to get you where you need to be.”

The Page Field and Pine Island Road Lee Convenient Cares are open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the North Fort Myers office is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The X-rays performed in our urgent care centers are usually covered under the office visit co-payment,” Dr. Bowers says.
