Residency Program Brings Medical Residents to Southwest Florida

Florida State Residency Program - Family Medicine Collaboration between Lee Memorial Health System and The Florida State University College of Medicine Family Residency Program will bring six resident physicians to Southwest Florida next year.

The program is expected to provide three years of training for six family physicians each year. "Our mission is to develop family physicians who are leaders in the community and who will provide high-quality, affordable primary care which includes treatment, prevention and health promotion for all patients," says program director and professor, Gary Goforth, M.D. "We will train them to care for the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of patients, their families and the community."

The idea behind the program is for many of the residents to stay in the community once they complete their training. "Historically, over half of the residents trained in a residency program practice within 50 miles of their training program, so our hope is that this residency program will play a significant role in meeting the primary care health care needs in Lee County and Southwest Florida," Dr. Goforth says. "According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, the family physician functions as the patient's entry into the health care system and is in a unique position to form a bond with the patient."

The residents will complete a 36-month curriculum to include rotations in:

  • Adult medicine
  • Behavioral medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • General surgery
  • Practice management
  • Community medicine
  • Geriatrics
  • Sports medicine
  • Emergency medicine
  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Ear, Nose and Throat
  • Urology
  • Orthopedics
  • Critical care
  • Neurology
  • Cardiology

The medical residents will practice medicine under the guidance of four physicians: Dr. Goforth; Julia Fashner, M.D.; Christy Cavanagh, M.D.; and Alfred Gitu, M.D. Clinical psychologist, Elena Reyes, Ph.D. also will work in the practice. The practice is already open and physicians are accepting new patients.

"After we gain experience with our Family Medicine Residency Program, The Florida State University College of Medicine and Lee Memorial Health System may eventually develop other residency programs to assist in meeting these future workforce needs," Dr. Goforth says.

“Our mission is to develop family physicians who are leaders in the community and who will provide high-quality, affordable primary care which includes treatment, prevention and health promotion for all patients,” says program director and professor, Gary Goforth, M.D.
