Gifts of Love

foundationWhen asked why she and her husband, Paul, named Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida's Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care Center—PPEC—as a beneficiary of their will, Anna Demarais said she wants the parents of PPEC children to know other people love and care for their children, too.

Love is what the PPEC is all about, as staff and volunteers provide daily treatment, therapy, socialization and stimulation to children who have special medical needs...all in a warm, loving, caring setting.

"I met PPEC director Lori Proia and went to the center to meet the children," Anna says. "They captured my heart."

Since then, Anna and Paul have reached out to help PPEC for many years, through their personal donations and by bringing others together to help the cause. Anna encourages her colleagues at HealthPark Care & Rehabilitation Center to support PPEC and is quick to highlight their efforts.

"Every year, the employees at the care center raise funds for the patients," Anna explains. "It's wonderful to see my co-workers getting excited as they work together to help the kids."

Through his role as president of Hadinger Flooring, Paul also works his magic to help PPEC's fragile patients. "Every year, the Hadinger employees donate toys and other items to make sure the children have a great Christmas," he says.

Originally from New England, Paul and Anna have been happily married for 16 years. Their giving entered a new phase when they revised their estate plan to include a will that, upon their deaths, provides 10 percent of their remaining assets to PPEC. This way, their estate plan also will take care of the needs of their own children.

"It was very easy to make the gift," Paul says. "We simply took the language provided by the Foundation to our attorney, explained what we wanted to do, and that was it." Paul says it makes him happy to see Anna happy as she works to help the children. "She lives for the PPEC," he says. "It gives you a great feeling in your heart to know you'll be doing something to help the children even after you've left this world."
