Back on his feet and Home for the Holidays

One November morning three years ago, Harold “Bud” Krommes
woke up with numbness in his legs.

“It took all of my strength just to walk to the kitchen for
my morning coffee,” he says.

As the day went on, Bud’s arms became numb, too, and his wife, Nancy, rushed him to Cape Coral Hospital. Tests began immediately, but Bud didn’t need them to diagnose his illness as Guillain-Berre syndrome. He’d
been diagnosed with this rare disorder, which causes the
immune system to attack the body’s nervous system, 30
years before.

“In 1976, they didn’t know what was going on,” he says.
“This time, they got on it right away.” His treatment plan
included a stay at LMHS’ Rehabilitation Hospital and
therapy at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral.

Lucky for Bud, his family has plenty of health care
experience. His wife, Nancy, is a registered nurse and his
three daughters all work for LMHS. But he also credits the
care he received from the LMHS “family” for taking extra
care to make him comfortable, and helping him regain his
ability to walk and do everyday tasks like button his shirt.

“All of this happened in about two weeks,” Bud says. While
it took him longer to get back to his old self, and he has
some permanent damage to his reflexes, he made it home
in time to join his family for their Thanksgiving feast – yet
another thing to be thankful for.
