Hospitals Treat Range of Psychiatric Conditions
Physical conditions may be obvious, with a clear treatment plan, but mental health
issues are sometimes more difficult to diagnose. Lee Memorial Health System offers
inpatient consultation services to all ages. Limited outpatient services are available
and will expand soon.
"Patients who are either having significant mood problems and/or have taken psychiatric medications but are unhappy with their progress could benefit from our services," says psychiatrist, Ajay Mayor, M.D..
Dr. Mayor and other physicians provide inpatient consultation services for adults and children and plan to expand their services to include outpatient child psychiatry services. Dr. Mayor says he has seen an uptick in the number of children and teenagers who need mental health services.
"Significant anger in children and teenagers is an important symptom of depression in that age group, and we all should keep that in mind," he says. "Young people need and deserve the same level of services that we provide our adult patients."
Dr. Mayor treats patients with a variety of mental health issues, from attention deficit disorder and depression to schizophrenia and hallucinations. "Many of our patients live with serious disorders that disrupt their lives," Dr. Mayor says. "Our goal is to help them get to a place where they can achieve a good quality of life." Patients receive referrals for inpatient treatment from attending physicians.
Outpatient treatment is offered through referral from community physicians and Lee Physician Group practices. "Children are usually referred either by teachers, parents or pediatricians," Dr. Mayor says.
