Joint Replacement Success Hinges on a Positive Mind

Nancy Casey told herself she was going to do her left knee replacement by the books. She swore she would do exactly what the experts told her to do. So when The All Star Total Joint Center told her to exercise before her surgery, she jumped in her pool. On land, Nancy could not bend down and sit on her heels, it hurt too much. But in the water, the 55-year-old could squat.

After surgery, Nancy stuck to her self-discipline. If she was lying in bed, standing at her kitchen counter or sitting in her reclining chair, she was flexing, straightening, lifting and bending. Four weeks after her June surgery, her doctor praised her range of motion and told her she could get back in her pool.

“I’ve said it a bazillion times, do what they tell you to do,” Nancy says about the program. “They know the system, they know what’s best. Look at me, I’m four weeks out, not even, and I can go in my pool.”

The All Star Total Joint Center at Lee Memorial Hospital works with patients, physicians, Lee Memorial Hospital and home health agencies to ensure each patient has a good continuum of care before, during and after surgery. The program ranks in the national top 10 for total joint replacements preformed. Patient satisfaction surveys showed Nancy how much the program cares about the patient experience.

“We hold pre-operative joint replacement classes to help patients set their expectations,” says Dolly Haymes, Program Coordinator. “Patients know they will be getting out of bed the day of surgery. They know, if they listen to our help, they will have better mobility.”

Before her surgery, Nancy had trouble walking up and down stairs. She used her upper body to push herself up and down the stair rail. Less than a month after surgery, she can walk up and down the dock steps leading down to her canal and feed the fish.

“There’s nothing there to hurt anymore,” she says, “Just some sore muscles and a healthy joint.”
