New Telephone System at Lee Memorial Hospital and Adjoining Medical Office Center Streamlines Communication

A new, state-of-the-art telephone system at Lee Memorial Hospital and the adjoining Medical Office Center will provide more advanced communication capabilities and better patient care.

The new telephone system by Cisco will launch Aug. 2 at Lee Memorial Hospital and the Medical Office Center. That means every telephone number at both locations will change on the go-live date. All numbers will have a “343” exchange, such as 343-5555.

The new system will help caregivers provide better patient care. The telephone system will provide the capability to create an automated patient room directory, meaning nurses and other caregivers will not have to answer the telephone at their units to transfer calls to patients’ rooms. This will enable nurses to ultimately spend more time focusing on patient care.

The new telephone system also provides the ability for daily reports that will help identify which departments are receiving the highest volumes of calls at what times of the day, so staff can be adjusted during peak call times to decrease wait times and improve customer satisfaction.

“Our primary goal is to get the new telephone system up and running with no or minimal disruption to day-to-day operations,” says Mike Smith, Chief Information Officer for the health system. “Information Systems staff will be at the hospital on the go-live date to provide support, and we ask that everyone bear with us during this time of transition.”

If a person calls one of the old telephone numbers at Lee Memorial Hospital or the Medical Office Center on Aug. 2, one of three things will happen:

  • The call will automatically be forwarded to the new telephone number if someone calls the old main line for the hospital or Medical Office Center, or any of the old main department numbers.

  • The caller will receive a voicemail message stating the new telephone number for a department or individual.

  • The caller will receive a notification that the number is no longer in service.

If this occurs, the caller should contact the main department number or the main number for the hospital or Medical Office Center to be transferred. On Aug. 2, the new phone numbers will be listed here: www.LeeMemorial.org/phones .

All fax machine numbers are also changing and will automatically forward to the new numbers. All numbers will automatically forward for at least 90 days.

Gulf Coast Medical Center, the Information Systems offices on College Parkway and the Outpatient Center at The Sanctuary already have the new Cisco telephone system. HealthPark Medical Center is scheduled to receive the new telephone system by December 2010, and Cape Coral Hospital’s phones will be updated in Fiscal Year 2011-12.
