New Method Provides Safe, Permanent Birth Control for Women

elective births Welcoming a child into the world is a life-changing event. Many women feel they have completed their family or have made the choice that they do not want children.

For these women, one of the most effective forms of permanent birth control is Essure. The Essure procedure involves tubal ligation, but is unlike other sterilization procedures.

“Essure causes the fallopian tubes to undergo a complete fibrosis (or scarring) that results in tubal occlusion (blockage) of the entire fallopian tube, as opposed to a small segment of tube,” says obstetrician/gynecologist, Cherrie Morris, M.D. “This results in an extremely low failure rate.”

Dr. Morris recommends the procedure for women who are confident that they do not want children or have completed their family. “This procedure is extremely effective and not reversible,” Dr. Morris says.

The Essure procedure is a safe, non-surgical, non-hormonal form of permanent birth control. Most of the Essure procedures are performed in the office with little discomfort. “Many patients do so well during the procedure, they actually watch me as I place the Essure coils into the fallopian tubes,” Dr. Morris says. “It does take the fallopian tubes about three months to undergo the fibrosis process, so effective birth control is mandatory during this period. At the end of the three months we will schedule a hystosalpingogram (HSG), a simple radiographic procedure, to confirm the tubes are absolutely blocked.”

Dr. Morris says that her patients have reported a high degree of satisfaction with the Essure procedure because they do not lose time at work or with their families and they do not have to take birth control pills or use another form of birth control.

“Many women don’t know something like this exists,” Dr. Morris says. “The idea of having a simple office procedure that requires very little downtime other than the visit itself, which provides effective permanent birth control and is more cost-effective than a hospital procedure or long-term birth control, is the ideal choice for most women today.”
