Occupational Health Physician Aims to Reduce Workplace Injuries

occupational HealthHe works as a full-time physician, but Andrew Singh, M.D., wears two hats—one of a health care provider and the other a hard hat that he uses to check job sites. Dr. Singh is the lead physician of Lee Memorial Health System's Occupational Health Services.

"My job has three components," Dr. Singh explains. "The first is to ensure that employees have a safe work environment, the second is to help employers lower their costs of work-related injuries and the third is to promote overall employee health."

Dr. Singh visits businesses in the community, checking on everything from workplace health and safety concerns to ways employees can work more effectively and safely. Along with the team of physicians at Lee Memorial Health System's Convenient Care, Dr. Singh treats patients who have sustained on-the-job injuries, including back pain, sprained wrists, twisted ankles, chemical exposures, lacerations or eye injuries.

"Some jobs are more prone to injury," Dr. Singh says. "But each job has it own inherent risk of injury. It may be ergonomics like lifting, working outside in the heat or on uneven terrain, dealing with chemicals, using machinery or responding to emergencies."

Dr. Singh, Paul Fortier, M.D., and Ann Boudreaux, M.D., ensure that critical safety sensitive jobs, like police officers, firefighters and truck drivers are healthy enough to perform their duties.

Dr. Singh is board certified in occupational and environmental medicine and has worked closely with a wide variety of companies. He is excited to be partnering with Dr. Salvatore Lacagnina on developing employer based workplace wellness programs.

"Our goal is to help create a safe and healthy workplace," Dr. Singh says. "If an employee gets injured on the job, we want to help that person make a full recovery as quickly as possible. Once healthy, we want to keep that person healthy by promoting health and wellness."

Southwest Florida has many unique businesses and Dr. Singh is happy to assist with any employer, whether in construction, manufacturing, trucking, retail, hospitality or office work.
